Fact and Fiction: Imagining the West is set in the Almeria province of southern Spain. This desert region often served as a substitute for the American West in "Spaghetti Western" cinema that emerged in Europe in the mid 1960’s. Three former film studios remain in the Tabernas Desert. In addition to photographing these sets and various locations used for films across Almeria, I went into bars, brothels, and beyond making photographs evocative of a modern-day western. The photographs challenge a viewer’s ability to discern the boundaries between fact and fiction.
